LIBA Supports Storm Water Bond Issue

I am pleased that the Lincoln Independent Business Association - LIBA LogoLincoln Independent Business Association (LIBA; LIBA.org) Board of Directors announced its support for the storm water bond issue to be included on the May 10, 2016, primary ballot.  Considering the nature of the projects included in the bond, and their importance in protecting the health, safety, and property of the Lincoln community, LIBA urges Lincoln voters to approve the storm water bond issue this May.

Over the past few weeks, LIBA has been asking city officials for a commitment to fund the $400,000 required for the city’s portion of the proposed storm water project at 56th and Morton in an effort to secure nearly $3 million in federal and NRD funding. The City Council is set to consider a resolution that will do just that. We cannot afford to risk losing the opportunity to get this project completed. LIBA is glad to see support for a resolution that will ensure Lincoln receives these much-needed federal funds to protect the business owners and residents in North Lincoln impacted by the 56th and Morton Street flood issues. On behalf of our members and all Lincolnites affected by flooding in the North Lincoln area, we thank Mayor Beutler’s office, Northeast Lincoln City Councilwoman Cyndi Lamm, City Council Chairman Trent Fellers, and other members of the City Council for their efforts to work together and protect our community.

Voters can go to the polls in May confident that this bond issue is properly tailored to address our city’s immediate storm water needs. These projects are necessary to protect the health and safety of our community and will benefit Lincolnites throughout the city.

In my final words of this column, I would like to extend my sincere thanks to Senator Tommy Garrett for his sponsorship of LR563. This resolution will cause an interim study to occur in the Nebraska Legislature regarding the high wireless telephone tax rates paid by Nebraska families and businesses.   Nebraska clearly has the second highest cell tax which is quite troubling, and we look forward to the legislature taking a close look at this growing concern. LR536 is an important first step in alleviating what has become a substantial and sometimes prohibitive tax burden for many Nebraskans.
