Honoring the important Women in your Life on Mother’s Day

Mother’s Day is Sunday, May 8th.  This is a day not only to honor your mother, but also the other important women who have made a difference in your life.  Sisters, grandmothers, stepmothers, aunts and even non-related mentors can all be on your list of people to make sure to include on your mother’s day list.

Not sure how to honor your mom this year?  Want to do something a little different?  Read on for some great ideas from local businesses!

Clothing and Accessories

If your mom is like most, she loves clothes and accessories but sometimes doesn’t take the time (or money) to treat herself as she should.  This gives you the perfect opportunity to give her a gift she’ll love!  Lincoln has some wonderful locally owned boutiques that have that perfect gift for the important woman in your life.

Cherie with Rachel’s Boutique says, “We’ve got a great promotion going on for Mother’s Day with Brighton.  If you buy a Brighton necklace and bracelet, you receive a pair of Brighton earrings for free!  Also, just in time for Mother’s Day, Pandora is offering a free gift with purchase.  If you purchase $100 of Pandora jewelry, you receive a free ring holder while supplies last.”

Unique and one-of-a-kind items always make great gifts and “b” | beyourself offers some very affordable options.  “Our earrings start at only $10, necklaces at $15 and watches at $25,” says Lindsey with “b” | beyourself.  “The best part is, we only get one of each style, so everything is unique.  I would also suggest one of our beautiful scarves that are priced at only $15 or $20.  If clothes are what you’re looking for, we have a huge selection to choose from.  We carry sizes from 2-20, so we truly do have something for everyone!”

“We have so many things in so many different price ranges and styles,” says Kelly Merklein with Blu Velvet, “so we are a great fit for any Mom!  I think it means so much to be thought of and for the gift giver to try and choose something just for that person.  The gift itself may not be exactly what the person would choose, but it is special because the giver tried to find something to fit the recipient’s personality and likes.  I think most mothers love that their children tried to find something special rather than just giving them money or a gift card.”

Getting your mom a gift from a local boutique not only makes a great gift, but it may also help her discover some local shops that she may not have been aware of before.  If she gets a piece of jewelry or a scarf she loves, she’ll likely ask you where it came from and will be the perfect opportunity for you to introduce her to the store.  It may just become one of her new favorites!

Spa Treatments and Salon Services

Mother’s Day should be about getting treated and pampered, and one of the best ways to do that is to get Mom a spa treatment that she would normally not treat herself to!  Kristin from White Orchid says, “We can do facials together if you and your mom would like to get one together.  The facials last about 60 minutes and include masks, neck and shoulder massage, hand and arm massage and more.  We also have skin care lines and makeup sets, so you can add on some complementary, take-home gifts as well.”

Getting Mom some services at a salon is also a great idea, especially if Mom rarely takes the time to treat herself to a professional cut or color.  Consider going in with your mom so you can chat with her while she gets her service done (and help her pick out a great new style or color!).  You can also get your hair done together, which is always a fun bonding experience.

Gift Baskets

Gift baskets, especially those with yummy treats in them, are always a hit with moms!  “We have a variety of gift baskets for your mom,” says Mary Miller with Totally Nuts.  “Choose from our signature cinnamon-roasted nuts to chocolate, butter toffee and dried fruit.  This year, we are also offering a homemade chocolate almond bark, which is very popular with the ladies.  We’ll wrap it all up for you in a cute spring basket or glass jar and you’re good to go.”

You can always customize your own gift baskets as well.  Throw in some delicious almond bark or nuts along with a beautiful scarf or piece of jewelry and top it off with a gift certificate for a facial or massage and you have the perfect gift that any woman would love!

“Mothers Day is a great opportunity to really show your mom how much you appreciate her hard work,” says Sarah Allison of Hallow Candle Co. “At Hallow Candle Co. we have gifts from soy candles, to bath salts and scrubs to diffusers and jewelry.  A basket filled with great treats that will impress and pamper any hard working mom is a great way to get her a little of everything! If you don’t want a large basket, we have our mini candles and local jewelry that are perfect to pair with a nice card or other gifts.  Our staff can easily assist you in putting together the perfect Mother’s Day gift, let her relax; we’ll do the work!”

Gifts for Her Hobby

Does your mom have a hobby?  If so, consider getting her a gift that will help her enjoy her hobby more.  If she enjoys knitting or sewing, a new sewing basket or high end yarn she can use to make a blanket or scarf would make a good gift.  If she’s a reader, pick out a few books that you think she might enjoy or give her a gift certificate to a local book store so she can pick out her own.  Is Mom a golfer?  A new putter, gift certificate for a few rounds of golf or even a new golf cart would enhance her hobby (and help her stay active!).  Golf carts are also great for moms who live on acreages and enjoy gardening as they can help them get around the property and keep them active and mobile no matter what their health concerns might be.

If your mom doesn’t have a hobby she loves, now may be the perfect time to help introduce one to her, especially if it’s something you enjoy doing and that the two of you might enjoy together.  Whether it’s a gym membership where you can play racquetball together, a couple of novels to introduce her to your favorite authors or enrolling her in a class at the local community college so she can learn basic cooking, knitting or painting skills, showing Mom that you want her to get involved in activities you love is a great way to show her that you care and want to share your life with her.

Get Mom a Limo Ride

Really want to do it up right for Mom this year?  Consider getting her a limo ride!  “Typically on Mother’s Day, we see moms being taken out for lunch or brunch,” says Aaron with Limo Services.  “There’s always transportation to and from the engagement, so why not reserve a limo for a two or three hour block of time?  You can go to and from the meal and then have an hour long limo ride afterward.  This is the day to treat Mom like a queen, so make it a celebration!”

The Most Important Gift of All…Time

If you really get down to it, there is usually one gift that is appreciated above all others—the gift of time.  In most cases, we don’t spend enough time with those we love and Moms are certainly no exception.  Whether your mom lives across the street or across the country, it’s likely that she would love to spend more time with you and would consider that the greatest gift of all.  Of course, that doesn’t mean you shouldn’t also get her a gift, but pairing the gift with some one-on-one time is the ultimate in gift giving.  Here are some ideas on how to do it.
Take Mom out to dinner  Taking Mom out for dinner is a great idea, but make sure you are really taking some time to spend with her while you dine.  Pick her up and drive together, linger over a glass of wine or a perfect dessert, chat about your lives and catch each other up on what’s been going on.  After dinner, consider going out for a drink, a movie or just back home for some cards or a board game.

Take Mom shopping  Whether or not shopping is your thing, your mom would probably love being taken on a little shopping ‘spree’ by you.  Visit some of the area’s local boutiques that she may not be aware of (especially if she doesn’t live in the area).  Let her pick out her own gift or pick something up that you see she’s had her eye on.  Follow up with a light lunch or dinner for a great mother-daughter day of fun!

Have a spa or salon day together  How much fun would it be to get pedicures next to Mom while you have some girl talk or relax together with side-by-side massages?  When you get pampered with Mom, you BOTH get a gift and you get the bonus of spending quality time together as well.  You can pair this with a little shopping or some lunch afterward for a perfectly relaxing day.

Mother’s Day only comes around once a year, and make sure you’re taking the opportunity to show Mom and the other important women in your life how much they mean to you.  There are a number of local businesses that can help you pick out that perfect gift for your mom and when you pair that with a heartfelt card and the gift of some quality time, you’ll have a day both of you will cherish for years to come.
