Reduce, reuse, recycle: your blood was again the theme of the second annual Recycle Yourself summer blood drive campaign. BryanLGH Medical Center was one of 19 organizations participating in the campaign held in partnership with WasteCap Nebraska (WCN), a non-profit organization providing resource conservation assistance to Nebraska businesses. Members of WCN were invited to host blood drives between June 1 and Aug 31, 2010 to help the Nebraska Community Blood Bank (NCBB) maintain the community’s blood supply over the summer months, traditionally a difficult time of year for blood collections. This year, nearly 70 new donors were among those donating a total of 638 units.
The tree, a Red Sunset Maple, symbolizes the gift of life that is given by volunteer blood donors. A monument to those who have donated and a tribute to the lives that have been touched, blood donation is the ultimate act of recycling. Much like a family tree, it represents all branches of blood donation, from blood drive organizations and donors to hospitals and recipients. Donated and planted by Campbell’s Nursery, the tree is located near the entrance to the BryanLGH College of Health Sciences. In addition to the Tree of Life drawing, the promotion included a coordinator luncheon for ten from the Olive Garden and monthly donor drawings for NCBB recycle totes filled with eco-friendly products.
