First American Payment Systems Warns of Recent EMV Compliance Scam

With the recent transition to the new payment processing systems that accept the EMV chip cards, scammers have been out in full force, taking advantage of those who aren’t yet well-acquainted with the specifics of the new legislation in place.

Recently, local business owners have reported a new approach that phone solicitors have begun using as a scare tactic. The scenario goes as follows:

You get a phone call from a payment processing company telling you that they’ve been alerted that you’re not in compliance. They tell you that if you don’t rectify the situation during the call or within a matter of hours, you’ll be fined by Visa or MasterCard. They offer you a solution that you can buy directly from them over the phone.

So far, the highest amount quoted that’s been reported is $849!

The statement that you will be fined directly by a major credit card company is 100% false. First American Payment Systems cautions all business owners that with the new EMV card readers, it’s simply a matter of shifting liability to the business owner in the event an unauthorized transaction takes place and this technology is not in place. There will never be a fine levied against you, but you do have a higher liability if you choose to go without.
