WasteCap Nebraska launches its 1,000 Bulb Recycling Challenge on America Recycles Day, November 15, 2011 as part of its Another Bright Idea (ABI) program. The challenge will run from November 15 through December 15 and aims to collect 1,000 used fluorescent bulbs, including Compact Fluorescent Bulbs (CFLs) at participating local retailers across Nebraska.
Consumers with used tubular fluorescent bulbs and CFLs simply take them to a participating ABI retailer who will recycle them!
Recycling CFLs is Another Bright Idea. Fluorescent lamps, including CFLs, work using a very small amount of mercury. For CFLs it is an amount about the same size as the period at the end of this sentence. For tubular bulbs it can be several times that amount. Because mercury is a potent neurotoxin, recycling of these lamps is encouraged by the Environmental Protection Agency and is required in some states and counties. Returning used lamps to a local retailer is a convenient way for consumers to recycle.
