Interview with Theron Ahlman, owner of CarePatrol of Nebraska

Give us a brief synopsis of what your company does.

At CarePatrol of Nebraska, we help families in Lincoln, Omaha, and surrounding areas find Assisted Living, Independent Living, In-Home Care, Memory Care, and more. We thoroughly review critical details such as the state’s care and violation history before we ever recommend a community, then personally tour select communities with the families much like a realtor would show a home for sale. An integral part of our company values is to go above and beyond with the services we provide; we’ll even pick up family from the airport to go on a tour! We’re able to provide our offerings as a free community service because we are compensated by thousands of providers in our network.

How long have you been in Lincoln/Omaha?

I have lived in the Lincoln area my entire life, and launched CarePatrol here in Nebraska in January of 2016. We began with the Lincoln territory and recently expanded with the acquisition of the Omaha territory.

Who are the owners/important executives?

My wife Brooke and I own the CarePatrol of Nebraska franchise, but for the most part I serve as the main company representative as she also owns and operates Brookelyn’s Hair & Replacement.

What do you think makes you different from other companies similar to yours?

I’d say the biggest difference is that CarePatrol is focused on safety. Since the organization was founded by a social worker, a lot of our programs and ideas come from that mindset. We always review the state’s care & violation history, we have a medication reminder program and a food service program for those who live at home, and we have a website that helps families make sure the senior’s house is safe for them. Most placement agencies are all about just that, the placement, but we understand that some people want to remain at home as long as possible. Our philosophy is to make sure seniors are safe no matter where they choose to live.

We’ve also established partnerships with many different businesses to help seniors pay for care. A part of these services is an Accredited Claims agent that helps with VA Aid & Attendance.

What is one of the biggest challenges that your company has faced?

Educating those in our community about CarePatrol, and more specifically, that a service like ours is available and it’s 100% free to those we help. Many people are used to going around to many different communities on their own, only to learn that they aren’t a good fit for a variety of different reasons. Now there’s help with narrowing the search and screening potential matches, which saves quite a bit of time by ensuring that key criteria are met before moving forward with that process.

What has been your most important achievement as a business?

Every senior we help place is important and helping them through a tough time is very rewarding. Each person is unique, and when an individual confidently picks his/her new home and is hopeful about what the future holds, that’s a satisfying achievement for me.

What was the biggest turning point in your business?

Purchasing the Omaha territory has been the biggest to date. We more than doubled the size of our business, and the Omaha market is so very different from Lincoln and the surrounding towns that we cover. With those two factors, there has been a bit of a learning curve to get adjusted.

What do you like about doing business here in Nebraska?

Those in the communities we serve are very friendly, clients and others in the industry alike. I enjoy working with nice people who also care about seniors. I do believe here in Lincoln and Omaha there are many people who are helping seniors for the right reason, and that isn’t the case in other cities.

What kind of community organizations/groups are you involved with?

Most recently, I served on the committee for the Alzheimer’s Association Blondes vs. Brunettes football game to raise awareness and funds for the cause. I also help with NeFigure8n, whose goal is to help promote figure 8 racing in Nebraska.

What do you see happening with the business in the next five years?

I see us growing and adding more employees to keep up with the increasing demand. Although CarePatrol is still relatively new to the area now, as more people have become familiar with what we have to offer and utilized our services, word has already spread about how we are able to help seniors and their families. I expect this momentum to continue, and there are also some exciting things we’ll be rolling out, so stay tuned as I’m not able to announce them yet!
