Star City Six – Lori Wellman

Lincoln Cabinet is a design and general contracting company that specializes in new construction and remodeling projects. The experienced professionals at Lincoln Cabinet work with homeowners to convert their dreams and ideas into reality. Lori Wellman, CKD, CGR, CAPS is a co-owner of Lincoln Cabinet (lincolncabinet.com), where she also works as a designer.

How did you get started in the business?

While attending the University of Nebraska at Kearney, I learned of their Interior Design program that had an emphasis in Kitchen and Bath Design that was accredited by the National Kitchen & Bath Association (NKBA). I graduated with a degree through this program. Upon graduation I worked in Fort Collins, CO for almost a year before moving to Lincoln to work for Lincoln Cabinet.

What is the biggest challenge you’ve faced professionally?

Finding a balance between my work and home life. My family, and spending time with them, is very important to me. I feel my job is very personal, since I am tearing apart and putting back together people’s homes, and I want each job to go as smoothly as possible. I am constantly trying to create a balance that works.

What has been your most important achievement professionally?

My success in working with my clients and creating spaces that are not only functional but also inviting. I have worked hard over the years to continually educate myself in various areas of the construction industry, gaining my certifications and stay involved in professionals associations for my field.

Tell us a little about your family.

I’ve been married for 4 years to my husband Scot Wellman, who works for Landscapes Unlimited. I have a stepson Orrin who enjoys Boy Scouts and golfing. He will be attending Irving Middle School next year as a 6th grader.

What do you see as one of the biggest turning points in your life?

Marrying my husband. Scot has brought so much to my life and is a huge support system for me personally and in my career.

What is your favorite thing to do on a day off?

I enjoy working in my yard and gardening, golfing with family and friends, attending Husker athletic events, reading a good book, and traveling to new places.

What is the most unique or interesting thing about you that most people probably don’t know?

I was in Grand Island on “The Night of the Twisters.”

What are you the most proud of?

It was a great achievement to jointly purchase Lincoln Cabinet with my business partner Heidi Polacek about a year and half ago.

What is the best piece of advice you’ve ever received?

Many years ago a builder I greatly respect told me that, “Sometimes there are jobs you know you will not be a good fit for and it is OK not to take on every job that comes your way.”
