In 2007, Randy Nelson was hired by a group of administrators in the ESU #6 area (Milford) to design and start a Career Academy Program for high school juniors and seniors.  This program was funded through a Carl Perkins Federal Grant and a partnership between 16 K-12 schools and Southeast Community College.  In 2011, SCC took over the program which now serves over 300 students in 32 schools in the SCC service area.  It is the only multi-school career academy of its kind in the state of Nebraska.  Randy serves as the Director of the Program, which includes all high school students taking college level or dual-credit classes from SCC.

What is the biggest challenge you’ve faced professionally?
As the superintendent in Lexington, NE I helped lead the district through a major transition to meet the needs of all students as IBP moved their plant to town – which increased our minority population by over 500% in less than 3 years.

What has been your most important achievement professionally?
Earning my doctorate and also when I was an elementary principal in Lexington, our building received The National Blue Ribbon Award for Excellence.

Tell us a little about your family.
I am married to my wife Jeanne (nearly 40 years) and we have two daughters.  Britney is 20 and Mogdi is 18.  We adopted Mogdi from an orphanage in Romania when she was 6.

What do you see as one of the biggest turning points in your life?
When Christ became my personal savior.

What is your favorite thing to do on a day off?
Read or walk my dog.  I also enjoy working outside on our farm.

What is the most unique or interesting thing about you that most people probably don’t know?
I was one of the last music majors at UNK who was also an All American in football.

What are you the most proud of?
My family and being selected as the Nebraska Superintendent of the Year in 2003.

What is the best piece of advice you’ve ever received?
Never underestimate the God-given talents you have.  Put them to good use.

What is the one goal you would most like to accomplish?
To serve the needy  I am working with a group from my church and we are starting an orphanage in Haiti – Global Orphan Hope.

How would your friends describe you?
I would hope they say someone who is caring.

What is your greatest talent that you don’t utilize in your daily work life?
Musical talents – singing and playing the drums.

Which talent would you most like to have?
The ability to play the piano well.

If you could change one thing about yourself, what would it be?
To have much more patience.
