Star City Six: Sara Reyes Sudman

Sara Reyes Sudman is the new owner of Fields Floral (www.fieldsfloral.com), a locally owned and operated floral and gift shop with rich history serving the Lincoln community for 40 years.

Tell us a little about your business.

This adorable shop has been a staple in the College View neighborhood since 1977. We provide floral arrangements and gifts for special occasions, weddings and just because.

How did you get started in the business?

First of all, I love flowers. There’s something about them that just makes me smile. As such, I wanted to own a business that made people happy or celebrated life, and Fields Floral does just that. I used to joke with my family and say that if I won the lottery, I would have fresh flowers delivered to my house every week. I still need to work on that…but at least I’m surrounded by them!

Tell us a little about your family.

I am happily married to Shane Sudman. In the fourteen years that we have been together, we have created two beautiful and sassy little girls, Belen (5) and Shay (2). They couldn’t be any more different in appearance and personality, but they make my life FUN!

What is your favorite thing to do on a day off?

Be outside! I love the warm weather and spending the day with my family at the lake or just taking in the fresh air.

What is the most unique or interesting thing about you that most people probably don’t know?

I was Miss Jefferson County 2003 and Miss Congeniality. I entered the pageant to earn scholarship money for school and it was such a neat experience!

What are you the most proud of?

I am the daughter of immigrants and a first generation college student. Working full-time to pay my way through school was challenging but an accomplishment in which I take great pride. Education is very important to me and I’m grateful that I had the opportunity to get one.

What is the best piece of advice you’ve ever received?

Don’t be afraid to explore every opportunity. If things don’t work out, that’s fine, but at least you tried and you won’t look back and say, “If only I had…”

What is your greatest talent that you don’t utilize in your daily work life?

I am an English minor, love to write and hope to author a book someday.

If you could choose any other profession to be successful in, what would it be?

Lawyer. I have a passion for standing up for what I believe in.

What local non-profit organization(s) are you passionate about or involved with, and are there any special reasons why?

Hope Crisis Center (because I worked for them many years ago), as it serves victims of domestic violence and sexual assault. I am a raving fan of People’s City Mission and CASA. In general, any organization that supports education and kids.

What is your favorite book or the last good book you read?

I am currently reading The Subtle Art of Not Giving A F***. I am very open minded when it comes to books and I like to be challenged, so here I go.

What is your favorite TV show?

I really enjoyed watching Sons of Anarchy! It’s over now, but boy, I couldn’t wait to see it every Tuesday night.
