Tell us a little about your business.
Our motto is “Stronger in 30 minutes, physically and mentally.” The workout at 9Round Fitness consists of a 30-minute, full body kickboxing circuit. There are no class times, so you are never late, the workout changes every day, so you are never bored, and there are always trainers to make sure you get a high-quality workout.
How did you get started in the business?
My partners and I have been collecting business ideas for several years. We ran an online retail store several years ago and got a little experience from that, but didn’t find any meaningful purpose. As we looked at the patterns in our business ideas, the vast majority of them were fitness/wellness/sports-related – swimming pool ideas, health club ideas, gyms, etc. We formed our company, “Get After It, LLC” and, after serious due diligence within the gym industry, purchased four 9Round franchise licenses for locations throughout Kansas and Nebraska – we truly believe it’s the best way to train, that keeps people sweating, smiling, and learning.
What has been your most important achievement professionally?
It’s rewarding helping our customers – our members – achieve their goals, but I think the most rewarding for me has been getting them off of prescription medications. Going through the journey of dropping 50lbs and getting off of diabetes and blood pressure medication with someone is truly inspiring. There’s an emotional connection in this industry, especially when you are trying to be health leaders in the community and strive to make the community better one person at a time.
Tell us a little about your family.
My wife and I met while I was in the military stationed in California, and we’ve been married for 13 years now. We have 3 kids, 2 boys and a girl.
What do you see as one of the biggest turning points in your life?
Leaving behind the corporate world completely and going all-in with our small business.
What is your favorite thing to do on a day off?
What is the most unique or interesting thing about you that most people probably don’t know?
My “fighter name” at the gyms (we encourage all trainers and members to come up with fighter names – it’s a lot of fun and we display them on a big screen TV for heart-rate monitoring purposes) is “Mucktar the Barbarian.” I received it from some of my teammates in the military for my “barbarian-like” strength while doing pugil stick wars (a pole-like training weapon kind of like boxing, but with a padded pole).
What is the best piece of advice you’ve ever received?
If you want to be paid for what you are worth in the market – for better or worse – you need to work for yourself.
What local non-profit organization(s) are you passionate about or involved with, and are there any special reasons why?
Ruby22. It’s not local (California-based), but it has local reach. They help veterans get refocused in the health and wellness arena by getting them gym memberships. Ruby22 has partnered with one of our 9Round gyms and also a fellow veteran-owned CrossFit gym.
What is your favorite book or the last good book you read?
Extreme Ownership by Jocko Willink.
What is your favorite local restaurant?
The Subway next to us!
