Lancaster County 4-H Reaches Underserved Youth, Offers More Learning Opportunities
As the opportunity gap widens between youth who have access to learning resources and those who do not, Lancaster County 4-H (lancaster.unl.edu/4h) is actively reaching underserved populations by providing life-changing experiences to youth wherever they are. In schools, after-school programs, and at home, 4-H is offering opportunities for kids to learn by doing hands-on projects to acquire skills, build character, and find talents that they can turn into careers. Nebraska 4-H School Enrichment programs are delivered to youth in cooperation with public or private schools during school hours in support of school curriculum.
Many Lincoln Public Schools (LPS), Lancaster County schools, private schools, and homeschool communities have integrated 4-H School Enrichment programs such as Embryology (Grade 3) and Nutrition Kits (Grades K-5). 4-H also offers out-of-school experiences for before- and after-school hours, teacher in-service days, school holidays, summer months, and weekends, along with a traditional club program where youth receive guidance from mentors and are encouraged to take on leadership roles. These programs are delivered by 4-H staff, trained volunteers, or teachers.
Lancaster County 4-H helps young people develop the skills, knowledge, and experiences they need to reach their potential—and that creates a greater number of engaged citizens and community leaders. 4-H raises funds to support these programs.
