This year, 49 state senators may debate the merits of requiring the Pledge of Allegiance in Nebraska schools grades K-12. The Lincoln Independent Business Association (LIBA) supports the patriotic practice of Nebraska schools leading their pupils in the recitation of the Pledge of Allegiance each day. It is a brief but powerful reminder that Americans support the cause of freedom.

This freedom did not come without inestimable cost. The lives of many men and women were given in selfless acts of honor and heroism, acts of sacrifice spanning from the Revolutionary War to today. “The cost of freedom is always high, but Americans have always paid it,” said President John F. Kennedy.

This freedom must never be forgotten. Thus, the cause of freedom has been taught in our schools and emphasized through the celebration of presidents’ birthdays and holidays set apart to remember our veterans and our independence. But we must be careful not to become too casual in the cause of freedom. “Freedom is never more than one generation away from extinction,” said President Ronald Reagan. “We didn’t pass it to our children through the bloodstream. It must be fought for, protected, and handed on for them to do the same.”

The Pledge of Allegiance serves as a reminder of the great cause of freedom. Reciting the Pledge remains a lawful and prudent exercise of our freedoms as Americans and acts as a standard of liberty among us today. The principles of freedom outlined in the Pledge are consistent with LIBA’s commitment to capitalism. Thirty-one words in remembrance of what allows us to take part in the free enterprise system: Freedom.

Forty-three other states have passed laws requiring recitation of the Pledge of Allegiance. It is important that Nebraska join the ranks of our fellow Americans and pass a law that requires schools to lead their pupils in the Pledge of Allegiance each day. Of course, students may decide not to participate.  That is the freedom of choice students have today.

The Pledge simply sets a standard for us to remember what sacrifices have been made, and continue to be made, on our behalf as citizens of the United States of America.
