The Human Services program at Southeast Community College has been reaccredited by the Council for Standards in Human Services Education.  Cinda Konken, program chair, said all “conditions” had been met for the reaccreditation through October 2018. SCC’s program has been accredited since 2008.

Program strengths cited include great Human Services “focus” courses (electives); the depth and breadth of education and experience of faculty, both full-time and adjunct; good faculty development support; an excellent rubric for cultural diversity; the “Rubric for Critical and Integrative Thinking”; the requirement for extensive criminal background checks; an extensive list of practicum sites; the clarity of student expectations as seen in the student handbook and syllabi; and a well-defined five minimum competencies paradigm.

The CSHSE National Standards are based on national research of human service educational programs that are grounded in relationship with services providers in their communities. In addition, the standards have been confirmed through national research (Community Support Skill Standards) and the continuing emergence of the human services field since the early 1970s. The standards are organized into two sections, Part I: General Program Characteristics and Part II: Curriculum. The CSHSE is recognized through the Council on Higher Education Accreditation.

The program started the re-accreditation process in January 2013. Accreditation is renewed every five years, and a site visit is required every 10 years. All standards must be met.
