The American Red Cross Cornhusker Chapter and Lincoln Chamber of Commerce kicked off Red Cross Month on March 1st with a ribbon-cutting ceremony, open house and blood drive at the Red Cross Cornhusker Chapter located at 220 Oakcreek Drive.  In addition, many special events were offered throughout the month in honor of their incredible efforts and contributions to our community.   Since 1943, every president including President Barack Obama has designated March as Red Cross Month, a time when the American Red Cross recognizes the everyday heroes who enable the Red Cross to fulfill its mission by giving blood, becoming a volunteer, making a financial donation or taking a class. Last year in the Lincoln area, the Red Cross Cornhusker Chapter responded to 75 local emergencies, assisted 390 military families and trained 7,939 people in lifesaving skills while the Red Cross Midwest Blood Services Region provided blood products to 67 Nebraska hospitals.

The American Red Cross shelters, feeds and provides emotional support to victims of disasters; supplies more than 40 percent of the nation’s blood; teaches skills that save lives; provides international humanitarian aid; and supports military members and their families. The Red Cross is a not-for-profit organization that depends on volunteers and the generosity of the American public to perform its mission.
