For the tenth year in a row, Japanese middle school students will join 65 of their American counterparts in “Broadway Bound” and seven other hands-on Bright Light classes for a week-long intense cultural immersion.
The Japanese students are from Senshu Middle School in Tokoyo. This trip is part of their middle school graduation and English immersion project. What began as an experiment ten years ago has blossomed into a two-way cultural experience for many Lincoln and Japanese students.
Class subject matters include Robotics, Dissecting, Woodworking, Cooking, Art, and Dancing Like a Star. The classes are held at Lux Middle School. In between classes the students share their cultures by teaching each other how to eat popcorn with chopsticks and learning how to bowl.
Families from Lux Middle School will also open their homes to host the ninth grade students for 2-3 nights as they have done for the past nine summers. Lincoln native John Sypal coordinates the program from Tokoyo.
