Matt Talbot Celebrates 25 Years of Serving the Lincoln Community

Twenty-five years ago Matt Talbot’s (mtko.org/25) founders, Mary Costello and Ruth McKinstry, set out to address a community need. They saw the homeless on the streets of Lincoln, many struggling with substance use, and they wanted to feed them. After sharing their vision with members of their church and recruiting volunteers, the first meal was served on Saturday, September 6, 1992. Through the grace of God, lots of hard work, a giving community, and unending hope – their vision of feeding the homeless became reality and over time grew far beyond their initial dream.

A quarter of a century later, Matt Talbot Kitchen & Outreach is a permanent fixture of Lincoln’s safety net – with volunteers still feeding the homeless and near homeless (now lunch and dinner every day) and professional staff offering a wide range of outreach services to prevent and alleviate homelessness.

Matt Talbot’s 25th anniversary is a testament to its enduring stability and service to the vulnerable citizens of our community. A special 25th celebration luncheon for the community will be held at Matt Talbot on September 6th at 12:15 with founders Ruth and Mary serving birthday cake. In addition, during this special anniversary year, volunteers, donors and guests are asked to visit mtko.org/25 and share a comment or story about how Matt Talbot has touched their lives.
