Gateway Senior Living, Lincoln’s First Retirement Community, opened in December of 1963.  Gateway offers all levels of senior housing ranging from independent living in duplexes or apartments, assisted living services, and both short term skilled rehabilitation and traditional long term care–all under one roof!  They are the only skilled nursing facility north of O Street, and close to all of the local hospital systems.  In honor of their 50th Anniversary, Gateway also opened their new skilled nursing rehabilitation tower with 80 private suites and a state of the art therapy gym in October.  Amy Fish is the Administrator at Gateway Senior Living.

How did you get started in the business? – I graduated from the University of South Dakota with a bachelor’s degree in Health Care Administration. Upon graduating, I worked as the Administrator of a nursing home in Crete, where I spent the next 12 years.  Since that time I’ve worked predominately in southeast Nebraska, but did spend 2 years in Flagstaff Arizona as the start-up Administrator of a large Continuing Care Retirement Community.  I’ve been blessed to work for the past 25 years with some amazing people.

What has been your most important achievement professionally? – Playing a role in the success and achievement of others is the most gratifying part of my job.  There have been countless leadership and direct care staff whom I’ve helped recognize for their outstanding work in the health care arena.  There are so many good people in our business; I feel it’s important to help tell their story.

Tell me a little about your family. – My husband Bob is the High School Counselor and golf coach at Centennial High School.  We recently celebrated our 20th anniversary.  Our two girls, Ashlee, 18, and Annie, 17 both attend high school at Centennial and keep us busy and broke!  My parents live in Falls City, NE, and my in-laws live in Hastings.

What is your favorite thing to do on a day off? – I love to golf.  I enjoy the weekly round of golf with my ladies golf group, as well as golfing with my husband and daughter Ashlee.

What are you the most proud of? – I am so proud of our girls.  They have grown up to be (mostly) responsible, kind and happy.  They recognize how important things like faith and family are in life.

If you could choose only one descriptive word to be remembered as, what would it be?

– Enthusiastic.  I have a burning enthusiasm towards life, work and fun.

What is your favorite local restaurant? – I much prefer to dine in restaurants that are locally owned.  Braeda for lunch is a favorite, and Lazlo’s and La Paz are also great.  The new Railyard is also a fun venue.

If you could have dinner with one famous person from the past or present, who would it be? – It would be fascinating for me to listen and learn from someone like Rosa Parks.  Her passion for doing what was right, even in the face of adversity, is a lesson we should all work to emulate.  Her quiet determination led to some of the most significant positive changes in American history.
