UNICO Group is one of the largest locally owned insurance and risk management firms in Nebraska.  With locations in Lincoln, Columbus, Kearney and Papillion, UNICO represents many companies and are able to provide their clients with many choices for insurance solutions and advice in order to best protect their personal or business assets.  Tami Soukup is the Manager of the Small Commercial Insurance Department at UNICO Group.

How did you get started in the business? – In 1990, I started as an ‘office girl’ for a Farmers Insurance Group agent in Sioux Falls, SD.  I managed his customers and did odd jobs for a couple other offices in our building in exchange for free rent.  In addition to learning insurance, I learned about several other things that were handed to me.

What is the biggest challenge you’ve faced professionally? – Starting out writing Home, Auto & Life insurance for several years and then switching gears to writing only Commercial Insurance.  There was a huge learning curve that I had to overcome to learn the ins and outs of a whole new world of insurance.  It was a great move and one that I’ve never regretted.

What has been your most important achievement professionally? – I am proud to have been promoted to manage our small commercial department at UNICO.  I am honored that the leaders of our organization have trusted me to run with my ideas in this area.

Tell me a little about your family. – I am so lucky to be married to my best friend and wonderful husband, Jeff, for 26 years.  We have two sons; Cory, who will be graduating from UNL this summer and Drew, who is just finishing up 4th grade.

What do you see as one of the biggest turning points in your life? – When I turned 40 it was like a light bulb went off inside me.  I was empowered, confident and ready to take on the world.  I knew myself better than I ever had before (good and bad) and I knew I could take on new challenges.

What are you the most proud of? – First of all, it’s my boys. I am fortunate to be surrounded by three of the most wonderful men I have ever met.  I am also proud to work at UNICO, as it is truly one of the most caring and professional organizations I have ever been associated with.

What is the best piece of advice you’ve ever received? – I am surrounded at work and in life by several people who have mentored me throughout the years with lots of great advice.  But I have to give props to my dad who taught me how to stand tall, shake someone’s hand while I look them in the eye, and to be assertive. Those lessons while I was growing up have served me well over the years.

If you could have a super power, what would it be? – To slow down time.  I would love more time in the day to have with the people I love and to connect more with friends and family.

What is your favorite book or the last good book you read? – I like to read biographies.  I really liked Tina Fey’s Bossypants.

What is your favorite TV show? – Mad Men.

What is your favorite local restaurant? – It is so hard to choose just one, but I will say I love The Normandy and I’m glad they are in my neighborhood now.
