Tell us a little about your business.
Xcel has been in business little over 30 years. We’ve won Best of Omaha and have been highly recommended by the Better Business Bureau year after year. We are not just some average Joe roofing company—we pride ourselves on making the process smooth and pleasant, and building strong relationships with our customers.
How did you get started in the business?
I was actually working for a Ford car dealership when my current GM at Xcel, Josh Conner, came in to get his truck worked on. He found out I’m a retired navy Seabee and I have a huge construction management background. I started two weeks after we talked.
What is the biggest challenge you’ve faced professionally?
Not being judged by the tattoos on my arms. It’s 2020—having tattoos in the professional arena is becoming more common. My tattoos are from being active duty military.
What has been your most important achievement professionally?
Receiving a medal for humanitarian relief from the military when hurricane Harvey hit the coast. We spent countless hours sand bagging and evacuating families off and around the military bases.
Tell us a little about your family.
My wife Sara and I have two kids—my son Zane and my daughter Rilynn. We moved back to Nebraska in October of 2019. We lived in Gulfport, MS for a little over five years. It definitely feels good to be back in Nebraska.
What do you see as one of the biggest turning points in your life?
Joining the military. It helped me grow as a person and a father.
What is your favorite thing to do on a day off?
If it’s not spending the time with my family, it’s working on my house to get everything finished. I’m always on the go! No days off!
Who inspires you?
My wife. She pushes me to do the absolute best, and she knows what I’m capable of doing. She’s my rock and without her, I wouldn’t know what to do.
What is your favorite quote or the best piece of advice you’ve ever received?
Keep on keeping on.

The Friends theme song.
If you could have a super power, what would it be?
Which talent would you most like to have?
What local nonprofit organization(s) are you passionate about or involved with, and are there any special reasons why?
The food bank. I remember volunteering there as a child and teenager, stocking the shelves and talking with the people who visited. It’s a wonderful place.
