Justin Cooksley has been in the restaurant industry for years and when he was given the chance to come to Venue when it first started with the original restaurant manager, Lavern Umland, he jumped at the chance to help build something from the ground up. He is now the General Manager of the restaurant that is now over eight years old. Venue prides itself on its amazing food and phenomenal service with the ambiance to match. They are the go-to spot for any occasion.

Tell us a little about your family. – I have been married to my wife Megan for almost three years now and we are blessed to have a wonderful (ornery) 14 month old son, Knox. Megan and I actually met here at Venue, which is another reason this place holds a special place in my heart.

What do you see as one of the biggest turning points in your life? – I would have to say getting married.

What is your favorite thing to do on a day off? – I really enjoy working in the yard/garden or outside and spending time with Knox.  It is those small moments with him when mom is at work, where he and I can make a man’s mess of the house and just have that one-on-one time.

What is the most unique or interesting thing about you that most people probably don’t know? – I love the thrill of high energy sports/activities. From white water rafting to sky diving, if I have not already done it – it is on my ‘bucket list’….oh yeah and I am VERY competitive (even in recreational volleyball, softball, baseball, basketball…you get the picture).

What are you most proud of? – Being a good dad, and having a happy, healthy, smart, inquisitive, beautiful baby boy!

What is the best piece of advice you’ve ever received? – As told to me by my grandpa – “Don’t ask for it to be easy, ask for it to be worth it!”

What is the one goal you would most like to accomplish? – Become a certified sommelier.

How would your friends describe you? – Loyal to a fault, ornery…and with an uncanny knack for remembering birthdays.

What is your greatest talent that you don’t utilize in your daily work life? – I love to cook, and while my wife and son enjoy it (or so they tell me) I would not want to compete with the talented chefs at Venue!

Which talent would you most like to have? – Singing!  I love to sing, but that is not one of my stronger talents.

If you could change one thing about yourself, what would it be? – I wish I had better handyman skills, both at work and home.  My wife wishes this as well.

What is your favorite book or that last good book you read? – I love reading books about my business. Everything from mixology, history of cocktails or current trends in the restaurant industry.

What is your favorite movie? – Top Gun

What is your favorite TV show? – Two and a Half Men (WITH Charlie Sheen)

What is your favorite Lincoln restaurant? – I think this goes without saying, but Venue.

If you could have dinner with one famous person from the past or present, who would it be? – Hank Aaron

If our readers would like to contact you, how should they do so? – You can reach me at Venue most days (402.488.8368), yourvenue.net, justin@yourvenue.net.
