Harris Academy of the Arts began as Harris Music Studio in 2004 where Vicki Harris offered piano and violin lessons in a retail space of 500 square feet.  Today, they are in the process of expanding to 4,200 sq. feet and provide many offerings within the arts such as private music lessons, group classes and ensembles for students of all ages, skill levels, learning styles, instruments and schedules.  HAA specializes in providing quality music education for a variety of instruments (piano, guitar, voice, strings, woodwinds, brass) as well as Kindermusik, Children’s Music Academy, Musical Theatre and Talent Coaching.  They also offer instruction for Spanish-speaking students.

How did you get started in the business? – Two employment opportunities helped me hone in on what I really wanted to do, which was to work with young people through music education.  As a site coordinator for Boys and Girls Town’s National Resource and Training Center, I worked as a consultant for Group Homes, Foster Care programs and Public Schools nationwide.  I also had the opportunity to work in the areas of Education, Personnel, and Operations Management for Lincoln’s Symphony Orchestra.  Experiences gained from both positions as a social worker and as a musician, respectively, have only enhanced the necessary skills for running an academy.

What do you see as one of the biggest turning points in your life? – Travelling as a cast member and pianist with the International Organization of Up With People.  One year, one suitcase of belongings (back in the ol’ days – no wheels!), 150 cast members representing approximately 27 countries, estimated travel to 9 countries, staying with approximately 175 host families, all while performing an estimated 250+ musical productions.  Nothing compares to the conversation cultivated as I sat down for a meal on any given day with each person at the table representing a different country.  My sheltered, rural, Midwestern upbringing was completely enriched for the better!

What is the most unique or interesting thing about you that most people probably don’t know? – I have been sky diving three times, performed in the Superbowl XX halftime production (unscathed by wardrobe malfunctions), and appeared on the “Bozo the Clown” show while playing a fiddle in a Swedish costume!

What are you the most proud of? – Years ago, I wanted to attend college in the worst way.  While working two waitressing jobs, I received a phone call from a stranger who encouraged me to get involved in a scholarship program that would aid in obtaining college scholarships through performance opportunities.  This very skeptical, however this unlikely pageant gal became Miss Nebraska 1991, participated in the Miss America scholarship program in Atlantic City, won a talent award, was a finalist for a community service award, earned thousands of dollars in scholarships and ultimately, attended and graduated from college!

What is the best piece of advice you’ve ever received? – Life is not a dress rehearsal!  Follow your true passions and live your best life performance TODAY!

If you could choose any other profession to be successful in, what would it be? – Storm Chaser.  I am fascinated with wild weather and love the energy and unpredictable strength of nature.

What is your favorite TV show? – “I Love Lucy” – A true classic!

What is your favorite local restaurant? – The Oven
