Bonsall Pool & Spa is a family owned and operated business that began when Jeff Bonsall’s grandfather built his first pool in 1951. Bonsall and his father run the business today and provide engineering, design, construction, service, and supplies for residential and commercial clients. The retail store at 33rd and Hwy 2 is the place to go for all your pool, spa, and patio needs. How did you get started in the business? – As with most family businesses, everyone helps out when they can, so I grew up working here summers and weekends. After graduating from Construction Management at Nebraska, I moved to Denver to work for a commercial construction company. I came back to Lincoln in 2001 to help grow our construction department and have been building pools ever since.
What is the biggest challenge you’ve faced professionally? – Trying to raise the standards of the pool and spa industry by utilizing proper design and engineering. That is why we focus on continuing education and new technology. This approach is more beneficial to our customers than just doing things the way they’ve always been done.
Tell me a little about your family. – I have been married to my wife, Jace, for nine years. We have a daughter, Isla, that is a year and a half old.
What is your favorite thing to do on a day off? – Cycling, cross country skiing, cooking, house projects, stuff like that.
What are you the most proud of? – My daughter, Isla. I had no idea how awesome parenting would be.
What is your greatest talent that you don’t utilize in your daily work life? – I’m not sure how good I am at it, but I love to cook. Creating something from scratch is very rewarding.
Which talent would you most like to have? – My wife, Jace, has a great singing voice. I’m sure she could have been an American Idol. I would love to be able to sing like that.
What is your favorite book or the last good book you read? – I read Goodnight Moon several times yesterday, it’s very good. But I end up reading in little bits and pieces throughout the day, so it’s usually magazines. Dwell, Bon Appetit, Cooks Illustrated, Aqua, Watershapes, and Pool and Spa news are some of my favorites.
What is your favorite movie? – All of Wes Anderson’s movies, but especially Bottle Rocket and Rushmore.
What is your favorite TV show? – The Office, Parks and Recreation, and I still miss Arrested Development.
What is your favorite local restaurant? – I can’t pick just one! Some of my favorites are Bread and Cup, The Oven, Venue, Dish, Yia Yia’s, El Toro, and Blue Orchid.
If you could have dinner with one famous person from the past or present, who would it be? – Gus Chiggins.
