How did you get started in the business? – It was more of a series of events that led up to how I started this business.  I started selling real estate in 1970 in Arkansas, then moved to Nebraska in 1975 and began selling real estate here. In 1977 I obtained my real estate broker’s license. During that time I began writing real estate correspondence courses for UNL. In July 1985 I became assistant education director of the Nebraska School of Real Estate. In 1990 my wife, Janet and I opened Larabee School of Real Estate. In 1995 I acquired the Nebraska School of Real Estate and two years later acquired Professional School of Real Estate. My wife and I worked together at Larabee School of Real Estate for approximately 15 years doing real estate education and became very successful.  Around 2002 I sold the Larabee School of Real Estate and remained as Education Director until December 2011. In June 2013 my wife started JMSK Real Estate Education and I began the education development side of the business.

What is the biggest challenge you’ve faced professionally? – Working through physical restraints while maintaining goals and confidence.

What has been your most important achievement professionally? – Having two successful entities running simultaneously, one by myself and one by my wife. We have managed and maintained our business on our own financially.  Most of my peers from my previous positions managed on other’s money, not their own. You sometimes wonder if they could manage and make it on their own.

Tell me a little about your family.  – Janet and I have four daughters and one son. In fact, JMSK is the first initial of each of their first names. Our two oldest kids’ names both begin with “J”.

What do you see as one of the biggest turning points in your life? – The death of my father when I was 13 years old. I took over the family farm for a few years and found if I quit, regardless of my failures, everyone depending on me would lose. This continues to affect my decisions today.

What is your favorite thing to do on a day off? – Family gatherings and NU football. I also enjoy playing with our Golden Retriever. I like to try various woodworking projects, but am not good at it.

What are you the most proud of?  – My family and their individual successes. Also, my students who have achieved success and their goals but never forgot to “pass it on.”

What is the best piece of advice you’ve ever received? – The only decision that is worse than a bad decision is no decision.

If you could choose any other profession to be successful in, what would it be? – Ethical attorney

What is your favorite book or the last good book you read? – Beautiful Outlaw by John Eldredge

What is your favorite movie? – A Christmas Carol

What is your favorite TV show? – Shark Tank

What is your favorite local restaurant? – The Lodge at Wilderness Ridge
