Tell us a little about your business. – Niederhaus Refuse was started back in 1921 by Jacob Niederhaus. The company actually started out offering residential waste removal services with a horse drawn wagon. Over the years the business has grown significantly and has since been passed down to Jacob’s son Harry, then to Harry’s sons Mike and now Scott. Today we continue to offer residential services but have also added commercial services, industrial services, roll-offs, and recycling services over the years. Always family owned and operated, Niederhaus Refuse takes great pride in its legacy of giving back to the community.
How did you get started in the business? – I was working for the Nebraska Department of Roads but was offered the opportunity to work for a small, family owned business where I could utilize my business degree in management and also have more of a hands-on approach in running the daily operations of the business.

Tell us a little about your family. – I have 7-year-old twins, Adeline and Ivan. They attend St. John’s Catholic School. My fiancée, Rusty Barlow works at Dynamic Fusion as a millwright and his 9-year-old son Alex attends Brownell Elementary School.
What do you see as one of the biggest turning points in your life? – When my mom was diagnosed with cancer a few years back. At the time I had also just found out my best friend was diagnosed with cancer too. It really made me aware of how precious life truly is and how we really need to consider every day as a gift and tell the ones we love what they mean to us. My mom and best friend are now cancer-free too!
What is your favorite thing to do on a day off? – Spending time with my family, whether we’re camping, playing outside, roasting marshmallows over a fire pit, taking my father’s 1936 Ford street rod out for a spin, or just doing a movie night at home.
