The Grand Island Veterans’ Home in Grand Island, NE recently received full certification on its annual Health Care System Survey from the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs for the third year in a row.
The facility, part of the Nebraska Department of Health and Human Services, had no deficiencies in the areas of life safety, resident care, environment, nursing, staff training and development, dietary/food service, banking and billing services for veterans, recreation/activities, medical staff credentialing, social work, and all areas related to quality assurance and care.
The VA surveyors were comprised of an interdisciplinary team including a registered dietician, fiscal surveyors, registered nurses, a clinical health surveyor, a life safety code surveyor and a clinical health specialist.
“Besides having a very competent and dedicated staff, the Grand Island Veterans’ Home is also fortunate to have overwhelming support from our service organizations and hundreds of volunteers,” according to Alex Willford, the facility’s administrator. “It’s a team effort from everyone connected with the Grand Island Veterans’ Home that has allowed us to maintain consistently high standards of care.” The Grand Island Veterans’ Home, originally known as the Nebraska Soldiers and Sailors home, opened in 1887 and was the first Veterans’ home in Nebraska.
