The “Haulers Helping the Homeless” project has officially begun, and participating garbage haulers are now collecting all unwanted clothing from their customers and taking these items to the People’s City Mission (www.peoplescitymission.org) for recycling. This creates a very simple and convenient way to donate. Here’s how it works:

• Just fasten a green “Haulers Helping the Homeless” tag around a regular trash bag full of clothes to be discarded. To get these “green bands” just go to any Super Saver, Hy-Vee or Russ’s Markets and pick them up for free.

• Place the bag out on the curb during your normal trash pickup day.

• Set your bag far enough away from the other trash so the green tag is easily identified.

• Please leave the bag out for the day – it may be picked up separately from your trash.

A single bag of clothing is valuable as it can fund the cost of a meal being given to a homeless person. This is also a great addition to the city’s recycling efforts and will help improve our environment by taking unnecessary and harmful items out of our landfill.

For those individuals who would rather have their clothing donated directly to people in need rather than being recycled, items can still be dropped off at any one of the Mission’s 25 Toss Boxes around town or the Homeless Prevention Center on 26th and O Street.
