Cornhusker Bank’s (www.cornhuskerbank.com) core values include: Live it, own it; Care like crazy; Deliver the “Wow” experience; Build positive relationships; Do life together. These values are all exhibited in the Bank’s annual Youth Safety and Savings Fair, which was held at the end of August. Cornhusker Bank’s civic-minded associates came together from every department to volunteer their time to work at this free event for the youth in our community. The Bank’s resident superheroes, Penny Wise and Super Bill were also on hand to interact with attendees. It is a perfect example of our “Hometown Bank, Hometown Heart” culture.

The Safety and Savings Fair was initiated four years ago as a way to make banking and finance a positive concept and experience for children. By making banking and finance a “fun” experience at a young age, Cornhusker Bank believes we can increase financial literacy by establishing a relationship with children as they grow. It is a real concern, as the March 2015 National Financial Educators Council reported 15 to 18 year olds in Nebraska scored only 58.19% on the National Financial Literacy Test.

Among the events featured at the fair were: bank staff sitting down to complete a page with kids in age appropriate banking workbooks and playing financial games featured on the bank’s website to cover the “Savings” aspect of the fair; a bounce house, face painting, petting zoo, balloon artist, and several carnival type games to cover the fun aspect of a fair; a free hot dog lunch for all attending checked off the food aspect of a fair; and Lincoln Fire Department personnel with a firetruck, and volunteering staff from the State Patrol doing fingerprinting for identification cards for kids, as the “Safety” component of the fair. Every child completing at least five activities at the fair walked away with a kite that will soar, just as the bank hopes they learn their savings can, if done regularly.

The Youth Fair is only one of the community outreach activities Cornhusker Bank’s staff participates in. Every April the bank also partners with the Peoples City Mission for One Day Without Shoes, involving the community in collecting shoes for the benefit of the Mission. Staff also regularly participates in activities for United Way’s Volunteer Day; the Food Bank of Lincoln’s Campaign Against Hunger and Empty Bowls events; the American Heart Association’s Walk; Junior Achievement Bowl-A-Thons; Heartland Big Brothers Big Sisters fundraising events; St. Monica’s Amazing Chase fundraiser; Capital Humane Society’s Tails and Ties fundraiser; American Cancer Society’s fundraising and awareness events; donating presents for Cedars Christmas present collection; and the Boys and Girls Club Trivia Night fundraiser. The bank itself also sponsors and donates to countless events throughout the community, including a sponsorship for the Matching funds for Give to Lincoln Day through the Lincoln Community Foundation, all in the spirit of “Hometown Banking, Hometown Heart”.
