Southeast Community College Presented With Equity Award for ACCT’s Western Region
Southeast Community College (www.southeast.edu) was presented with the 2015 Association of Community College Trustees Western Region Equity Award during the organization’s Annual Leadership Congress in San Diego, CA. Kathy Boellstorff, chairperson of SCC’s Board of Governors, and Dr. Paul Illich, SCC president, accepted the Charles Kennedy Equity Award on behalf of the College.
SCC’s nomination centered on its Learn to Dream Scholarship, which was created in 2007 through a partnership between SCC, Union Bank & Trust and Nelnet. The program is designed to provide eligible students with free tuition for up to 45 quarter credit hours of classes at any of SCC’s locations. All graduating seniors who qualify for free and reduced lunch as defined by the U.S. Department of Agriculture are eligible for the LTD Scholarship.
Learn to Dream services include help with homework and tutoring services; personal mentoring and support; educational goals and planning; financial aid, scholarships and money management; retention support; registration guidance and support; transfer advising; career exploration; and locating textbooks and supplies for college.
Since LTD’s inception, more than 3,400 students have been awarded the scholarship, and more than 2,200 have enrolled and have availed themselves of various academic, instructional and related support activities at SCC. To date, more than 600 LTD students have either graduated from SCC or have started their higher education pursuits at SCC and then transferred to another post-secondary institution.
