Healthy Families Eat Fresh: Community Crops Veggie Van Hits the Streets
The Community Crops Veggie Van (communitycrops.org) is a mobile farmers market that improves access and affordability of fresh produce for families in Lincoln. Located at the Health 360 Clinic (23rd and O Streets) every Thursday from 3-6pm, local fruits and vegetables will be available for purchase and users of SNAP will get 50% off their purchases.
Ben McShane Jewell, Executive Director of Community Crops, explains that: “The mobile market is an innovative way to bring healthy, affordable fruits and vegetables to the people that need them most. Situating the market at Health 360 allows us to reach these families directly at a point of need, increasing their accessibility to fresh food.” Because of generous funding from the Community Health Endowment, Bryan Health, Keno Prevention Fund, Blue Cross Blue Shield of Nebraska, and the Clif Bar Foundation, all of the produce sold will be grown by local, organic farmers. “This project not only improves the physical health of our city, but also its economic wellbeing, by putting money back into the pockets of local businesses,” McShane Jewell noted.
