American Cancer Society Emphasizes Importance of Colon Cancer Screenings
The American Cancer Society (www.cancer.org) released the following statement to educate the public on getting screened for colorectal cancer:
“Many people with colon cancer or polyps don’t have symptoms, and the risk of getting colon cancer goes up with age. That’s why men and women need to get screened for colon cancer starting at age 45, even if they feel healthy. If you have a family history of the disease or have certain other risk factors, you should talk with your provider about beginning screening at a younger age. Screening can help find and prevent colon cancer. In fact, if your doctor sees polyps that look like they can turn into cancer, they will remove them. When you have polyps like these removed, you may be preventing cancer! Preventing colorectal cancer, or finding it early when it might be easier to treat, doesn’t have to cost a lot of money. Simple, affordable, take-home tests are available. You’re so important to your family. Don’t let them down. Get screened for colon cancer today! It could help save your life.”
