Health Food Access Assessment Now Available from Community Action

As part of a legacy project funded by Community Health Endowment of Lincoln, Community Action Partnership of Lancaster and Saunders Counties (www.communityactionatwork.org) has released a report assessing the current state of access to health food in Lincoln and underlying needs. It also explores opportunities for further development.

The report summarizes the progress made by the Healthy Food Access Program, a partnership between Community Action and Food Bank of Lincoln, born of the same legacy grant from Community Health Endowment. The program, which officially launched in 2019, includes two main components.

The first component is a 5,000-square-foot kitchen located at Community Action’s 210 O St. headquarters that is used to prepare nutritious meals for some of Lincoln’s most vulnerable children and store/package locally-grown produce for distribution to healthcare facilities, schools, and retail markets. Two businesses—Kinder Bites LLC and Lone Tree Foods—utilize the kitchen space to do this work.

The second project component is Lincoln Fresh, a truck operated by Food Bank of Lincoln, that distributes produce to the city’s highest-needs neighborhoods.

A detailed assessment of the program’s progress, including outcomes achieved so far, underlying need, a review of community resources, and recommendations for future expansion, is available online on the Community Action website.
