Donations Make DSAF’s Not So Bummer Summer Program Possible

Donations from the Lincoln Community Foundation and other individuals and business sponsors of the COVID-19 Relief Grants and Give to Lincoln Day made it possible for the Down Syndrome Association for Families (DSAF; www.dsafnebraska.org) to carry out a Not So Bummer Summer program this year. The virtual learning-from-home program—which began June 30 and runs through August 13—includes virtual fun, educational, and enrichment opportunities for individuals with Down syndrome who are still social distancing at home.

People with Down syndrome are among those at highest risk for COVID-19. So, while most residents are celebrating the reopening of stores and public venues, families of children with Down syndrome are still extremely concerned about the risk to their child’s health. That’s why DSAF ushered in the Not So Bummer Summer program—to help families stay engaged even from home. The program offers eight different opportunities for people of all ages with Down syndrome, including things like Signing Time subscriptions to teach sign language to infants and toddlers, Improvaneer improve classes for school-aged kids through young adults, Overall Buddies singalong time, physical and occupational therapy group sessions, and more at dsafnebraska.org/events.

The Down Syndrome Association for Families formed in 1995 as a way for parents to network and share the accomplishments of their children. The organization’s mission is to provide support and a positive vision for the future for individuals with Down syndrome and their families, friends, educators, and professionals who share in their lives.
