CASA for Lancaster County New Volunteer Training to Begin January 19

If your New Year’s resolution is to become more selfless through volunteering, consider joining CASA (www.casa4lancaster.org) for Lancaster County on their mission to ensure that the needs and interests of abused or neglected children are being met. CASA (Court Appointed Special Advocate) is holding a new volunteer training once a week for five weeks on Tuesday evenings from 6 to 9 p.m., in addition to a shorter orientation session on Tuesday, January 19. All sessions will be held at CASA for Lancaster County, 1141 H St., STE C (3rd floor). Due to COVID, the in-person sessions may be held via Zoom depending on conditions.

To be a CASA volunteer means you are a trained citizen appointed by a Juvenile Court Judge and assigned to dependent and/or delinquent (truant or ungovernable) children who are under the Juvenile Court’s jurisdiction. You will serve as an arm of the Juvenile Court as researcher, monitor, and child advocate. This means interviewing children, parents, foster parents, and any other concerned parties or relatives; conferring with counselors, teachers, social workers, etc. involved with the case; and submitting thorough, independent, written reports to the Court with copies to all parties prior to court hearings. Time commitment is 4–10 hours a month. Other requirements and responsibilities can be found on the website.

CASA for Lancaster County provides a voice for abused and neglected children in the court system so they can thrive in safe, permanent homes. CASA volunteers experience a sense of worth and accomplishment from their work and gain experience that helps them grow both personally and professionally.
