Join HopeSpoke in Crucial Conversation for Children’s Mental Health Awareness Week
In honor of Children’s Mental Health Awareness Week May 2-8 and Mental Health Awareness Month throughout May, HopeSpoke (www.hopespoke.org) is asking the community to join in crucial conversation about mental health. The fact is, one in five of us is affected by mental health or substance use issues, and young people are not immune. Children and teens cope better when they know that mental health challenges are not uncommon—and that it is important to reach out for help. If a young person in your life needs to talk about their problems, HopeSpoke can help. Last year, nearly 1,800 children, youths and families gained insight and skills through the nonprofit’s comprehensive behavioral and mental health services.
“We look to others, especially those who we admire, to learn how to cope when we are struggling,” said HopeSpoke Executive Director Katie McLeese Stephenson, MSW. “Be the adult that lets them know that what they are experiencing is normal, and that there is help available. Your response can make all the difference at a crucial time.”
Take “Nick,” for example. He is a young person who has learned to improve his mental health by talking about it. Nick was fighting with classmates and teachers and running away or hurting himself when feeling upset. At HopeSpoke, Nick learned healthier ways to manage anxiety, such as journaling to express his feelings. He and his mother also have learned healthy communication and calming skills via interactive therapy. Today, Nick is living a healthier, more joyful life—the kind every child should have.
