This year People’s City Mission (www.pcmlincoln.org) celebrates its 115-year anniversary! For over a century they have been the city’s primary homeless shelter, housing and feeding all who come through their doors. The Mission also provides food, clothing, and household items to large numbers of families and individuals who are not homeless but struggling financially.

Incredibly, the Mission has helped more than one million people since it started back in 1907. The Mission provides those in need a wide variety of services, including: temporary housing for families and single women; transitional housing for single women; both emergency shelter and transitional housing for men; day services for men; a large outlet called the Help Center that distributes millions of pounds of food, clothing, and household items to individuals at or near the poverty line; a free clinic; and Safe Place, a network of businesses or organizations around the city where kids can get quick assistance when needed.

What is most unique about the Mission is that almost all of its funding comes from public donations. They are also one of the very few nonprofits in Lincoln that gives over 90% of every dollar directly to the need. In addition, the Mission relies heavily on the assistance of more than 25,000 volunteers each year.
