International Quilt Museum Announces Upcoming Exhibitions in January
The Friends of the International Quilt Museum (www.internationalquiltmuseum.org), the supporting foundation of the International Quilt Museum, have announced two upcoming shows kicking off this January. The first show will be available January 5 to May 14, and will feature the work of Anne Burton, a printmaker whose work has often addressed the subjects of feminism and identity. However, the experience of her son contracting a rare bacterial infection sent her work in a new direction. To cope with and understand what was happening, Burton began a series of reduction woodcut prints into which she worked out her fears and illustrated her crash course in the biology of bacteria and the medical interventions, including two surgeries, her son received. Her prints also have an underlying geometry drawn from mapping quilts in the International Quilt Museum collection. The result is a fascinating series of prints that brings together her roles as an artist and mother into a cathartic visual narrative.
The second show, Bedtime Stitches, is produced by Salley Mavor and will be available January 25 to April 9. The designs focus on showcasing Salley Mavor’s finely detailed original works that serve as illustrations in her latest picture book, My Book: Enchanting Ways to Fall Asleep Around the World. Each piece of embroidery captures the spirit of a different place and way of life, while illuminating the universal vision of children sleeping safely in their beds.
The International Quilt Museum, located on the University of Nebraska-Lincoln’s East Campus at 33rd and Holdrege, is on a mission to build a global collection and audience that celebrate the cultural and artistic significance of quilts. Visit www.internationalquiltmuseum.org for more information.
