Catholic Social Services in Need of Temporary Housing for Afghan Refugee Arrivals

The Catholic Social Services of Southern Nebraska (CSS, csshope.org) Refugee Resettlement team has been working hard to resettle Afghan families and individuals since October 2021.

The CSS staff has faced challenges trying to find housing for incoming Afghan arrivals while also facing a housing crisis in Lincoln. At times, CSS has been placing Afghan arrivals in hotels until they can locate permanent housing. Darryl Hunter recently lent a helping hand to CSS because he had an empty house – and a great idea to fill it. Darryl plans on selling his home but is in no rush, so he asked if CSS could utilize it for their refugee program. CSS now uses Darryl’s house as a transitional home where single men live until they are able to find permanent housing. The use of Darryl’s home has greatly helped those within the refugee program and saved CSS on costly hotel stays. CSS anticipates 140 new arrivals by mid-February, and are seeking landlords in the area who would be willing to do the same as Darryl. Those interested in partnering with CSS to provide temporary housing for refugees should contact Erika Stewart-Finkenstaedt at (402) 560-6394 or estewartf@cssisus.org.

Catholic Social Services of Southern Nebraska is a nonprofit agency of the Catholic Dioceses of Lincoln that traces back to 1932. For more information about CSS and their refugee program, visit csshope.org.
