Lincoln TeamMates (LincolnTeammates.org) is proud to share that February is Nebraska State Mentoring month. For the past several years, Mayor Leirion Gaylor Baird has highlighted what this means for the Lincoln Community, saying, “Lincoln residents are committed to high quality mentoring programs that provide caring adult mentors to youth across our community.” She observes that the “city of Lincoln encourages businesses and other organizations to support mentoring programs with their time, talents and treasure.”
Gaylor Baird encourages mentoring programs and spotlights the indelible effects, “Mentoring programs support mentees’ personal growth, academic success, social skills, community engagement and positive decision making. Mentoring programs encourage young people to set and achieve goals, to graduate from high school and to pursue post-secondary education.” Mayor Gaylor Baird concluded, “Mentoring at its core guarantees young people that there is someone who cares about them, assures them that they are not alone in dealing with day-to-day challenges and makes them feel like they matter.”
TeamMates Mentoring seeks to train and match many new mentors for the 2023/2024 school year. Within a mile of where you work or live, there are dozens of young people who need and want a mentor. Consider spending one hour a week with a young person in your community; the impact for them and for you can be incredible.
