Meet Trevor Ohlmann, Replacement Manager at Custom Cooling & Heating (customcooling.net).

Tell us a little about your business. – Custom Cooling & Heating has been serving Lincoln and the surrounding small towns for over 40 years. We specialize in residential replacement, residential new construction and residential service. We do a variety of other work such as minisplits, commercial install, commercial service and fume extraction.

How did you get started in the business? – My dad was has worked at Custom Cooling & Heating since I was a baby. He eventually became part owner and then sole owner. I guess you could say I grew up around the business. I started working here during my high school summer and winter breaks. I went part time while I pursued I college degree but have been working full time again since 2019.

What is the biggest challenge you’ve faced professionally? – The biggest challenge our business has faced would be the inflation and supply chain issues associated with COVID-19. There were times when it was very difficult to source new equipment and replacement parts. This of course put a strain and both us and our customers.

What has been your most important achievement professionally? – I recently became licensed as a Mechanical Journeyman in the city of Lincoln. Required three full years of working as a registered Apprentice as well as passing a national and city code book test. This was an important step on my way to becoming a licensed Master Mechanical contractor.

Tell us a little about your family. – I have been married to my wife for nearly five years. She is also from the Lincoln area and works at a local print shop in downtown Lincoln. We have a wonderful two year old daughter.

What do you see as one of the biggest turning points in your life? – Definitely the birth of my daughter. Having a child changes your outlook on life and your career. She has motivated me to strive for more.

What is your favorite thing to do on a day off? – Relax and spend time with family. Also find some time to play video games.

Who inspires you? – I’m inspired to be my best by my wife and daughter. It’s a lot easier to get up for work everyday when you are focused on providing the best life for both of them. They both inspire me to be my best in my personal and professional life.

What is your favorite quote or the best piece of advice you’ve ever received? – “You miss 100% of the shots you don’t take – Wayne Gretzky” – Michael Scott. Albeit a dumb joke from my favorite TV show, I think this in a great way to think about life and business.

If you could choose only one descriptive word to be remembered as, what would it be? – Dependable.

What is your greatest talent that you don’t utilize in your daily work life? – I used to really enjoy drawing and wasn’t half bad at the time. Unfortunately this skill isn’t really something used much at work.

If you could choose any other profession to be successful in, what would it be? – Zookeeper or vet. I have always enjoyed being around animals and a career involving them sounded intriguing.

What is your favorite book or the last good book you read? – What If? By Randall Munroe is fun and interesting read. Recommend if you enjoy science, math or ridiculous questions.
