Nebraska Public Media (NebraskaPublicMedia.org) earned 11 awards, including five first-place honors, in the 2024 Midwest Broadcast Journalists Association Sevareid Awards.
The awards were announced during the Midwest Journalism Conference April 5 and 6 in Minneapolis. They cover the regions of Minnesota, Wisconsin, Iowa, North Dakota, South Dakota and Nebraska.
For large market radio news, Nebraska Public Media earned four first place awards: “Indigenous, intergenerational sewing group empowers and heals through fashion,” in the diversity, equity and inclusion category; “After 100 years, Nebraska revives plans to build a canal, stirring controversy with Colorado,” in the news series category; “Art replaces alcohol at the Whiteclay Makerspace,” in the soft feature category and “Omaha celebrates Terence ‘Bud’ Crawford as its boxing champion, humble neighbor,” in the sports reporting category.
Five awards of merit were given to Nebraska Public Media for large market radio news, including “Winslow, NE begins to burn flood damaged homes,” in the use of audio category; “’Everyone’s sympathetic,’ But after four years without safe drinking water, sympathy isn’t enough for the Santee Sioux Nation,” in the general reporting category; “Nebraska wheelchair cross country competitor hopes to inspire others,” in the soft feature category and “92,003 fans set a record for women’s sports attendance watching college volleyball,” in sports reporting.
