Lincoln Airport (lincolnairport.com) is in the design phase of an approximately $ 1 0 0 million runway reconstruction project, likely to begin construction in November 2025. This complete replacement of the airport’s nearly 13,000-foot runway will be jointly funded by the National Guard Bureau, the FAA and the Lincoln Airport Authority, with the Airport Authority itself covering 5% to 10% of the project costs. Estimated to take two years, the project reflects the vital role this runway plays for both military and civilian operations.
Built in the early 1940s during World War II and expanded during the Cold War, the airport’s primary runway is among the longest of any commercial airport in the U.S. This is essential for the Nebraska Air National Guard’s 155th Air Refueling Wing, which operates eight Boeing KC-135R Stratotankers. These large aircraft require a runway with greater length, making this renovation key to maintaining support for military needs alongside commercial operations.
In addition to the local benefit, the runway provides national benefits as well. The Department of Defense considers the unique length of the runway to be an important asset to our national security. With the help and advocacy of Senator Deb Fischer and her work with the Nebraska National Guard, STRATCOM leadership, the 55th Wing at Offutt Air Force Base, and the Department of Defense, funds were committed to reconstruct the runway in full and establish this asset for many years to come.
