A year ago in September of 2021, Derrick and Rebecca Pearson challenged the status quo by acquiring 93.7 The Ticket (theticketfm.com), making them one of only a few sports talk radio stations that are owned by a person of color and/or a women, let alone both.
According to the Alliance for Inclusive and Multicultural Marketing (AIMM), minority-owned media represents 6.7% of all media. This data reveals the disconnect in the media industry between investment levels and visibility of minority-owned entities.
Building a multimedia brand in the heart of the country might seem unattainable for some, but relationships with the student-athletes at UNL has helped to shape the vision the Pearson’s see for the station going into the future. They aim to make The Ticket a place where those in the minority have a voice and help give open, honest, factual stories about sports and the people in sports.
Derrick has extensive experience in radio, coaching high school sports, running professional sports teams, and as a life coach. He hosts several shows each day talking primarily about Husker athletics. Rebecca brings her leadership and business knowledge from being a C-level marketing executive and global brand management expert to The Ticket, pushing the station toward exponential growth and impact.
93.7 The Ticket streams in-depth sports talk across all Husker sports, in addition to other teams such as the Lincoln Stars, Lincoln Saltdogs, and high schools. They partner with student-athletes, coaches, parents, and educators that make up the Lincoln community and the state of Nebraska.
