Lincoln, Nebraska is steadily developing one of the greenest, tree-filled communities in the nation. Through the use of the Silva Cell, which creates an underground framework for trees to grow healthily, the city has built green spaces that previously seemed impossible. City officials are optimistic that this effort will encourage more businesses to call Lincoln home, thereby growing the local economy. “There is a large body of research that shows that business centers with large, mature trees lead to lower vacancy rates in business developments,” stated Peter MacDonagh of The Kestrel Design Group, one of the leading landscape architecture firms advancing the use of the Silva Cell in the region.
There have already been six Silva Cell installations in Lincoln. The largest project is at the Centennial Mall, which is part of an ongoing $9 million project to make improvements to “Nebraska’s front door to the State Capitol.” As cities increasingly compete with one another to attract companies, Lincoln believes that trees are an important and inexpensive investment that will give it a big advantage. As the thousands of trees continue to grow, they will offer economic, ecological and community benefits to local residents. To learn more about how the Silva Cell
