On July 31, Lincoln Airport (LNK) (lincolnairport.com) welcomed 120 attendees to its 3rd Annual Human Trafficking Awareness Event, providing a free opportunity to learn, connect and take action against human trafficking.
The event brought together 10 expert speakers from organizations dedicated to educating the public, preventing human trafficking and supporting those impacted by it. LNK Board Member Nicki Behmer moderated the panel, which featured Nebraska State Senator Carolyn Bosn and Maraya Lasinsky, Chief Engagement Manager for the U.S. Department of Homeland Security’s Blue Campaign, representing the Blue Lightning Initiative (BLI).
LNK has partnered with the Blue Lightning Initiative since 2023, joining airports and airlines across the country in working to recognize and prevent human trafficking. Through this partnership, all LNK personnel complete specialized BLI training to better identify and respond to potential signs of trafficking.
Beyond the panel, attendees connected with local organizations explored informational booths and learned about resources available in the community. Local food trucks were also on-site, and attendees participated in the Red Sand Project, a global public art initiative designed to draw attention to people who fall through the cracks of society and remain vulnerable to exploitation.
With thousands of travelers passing through LNK each year, the airport plays an important role in recognizing potential signs of human trafficking. Human trafficking can happen anywhere, including right here in Nebraska. LNK is grateful to the speakers, organizations and community members who came together to raise awareness and create space for meaningful conversations around this important issue.
