Madonna Rehabilitation Hospital Meets New Guidelines for Stroke Patients

Newly released guidelines for stroke patients highlight the importance of inpatient rehabilitation, a comprehensive program provided at Madonna Rehabilitation Hospital (www.madonna.org).

“Whenever possible, the American Stroke Association strongly recommends that stroke patients be treated at an inpatient rehabilitation facility rather than a skilled nursing facility,” the American Heart Association and American Stroke Association said in a joint statement on May 4.

At Madonna Rehabilitation Hospital, physical, occupational, speech, recreational and respiratory therapists, along with rehabilitation nurses, a social worker and a case manager form a treatment team to work together to help meet the individual needs of stroke patients who are in various stages of recovery.

“There is considerable evidence that patients benefit from the team approach in a facility that understands the importance of rehabilitation during the early period after a stroke,” said the study’s lead author, Carolee J. Winstein, who also is a professor of biokinesiology and physical therapy at the University of Southern California, in Los Angeles, CA.

Madonna’s goal is to help stroke patients become as independent as possible in order to integrate back into their lives and communities.
