The Bridge Behavioral Health Honors National Recovery Month

The Bridge Behavioral Health (www.thebridgenebraska.org) is celebrating recovery month this September by sharing a story from one of their own. Barbara Bradford, LICSW, LIMHP, is a counselor in withdrawal services at The Bridge. She shared a bit of her addiction and recovery journey:

“I drank initially to stay numb,” Barbara began. “My childhood was chaotic, filled with violence and under-treated mental illness. When I was drunk, I didn’t have to deal with the hurt, shame, and guilt of thinking it was all my fault. While my ‘bottom’ doesn’t include any involvement in the legal system, it does include too many missed opportunities and failed relationships.

“Getting sober was the best gift I ever gave myself. I’ve learned its okay to have feelings – even the negative ones. I am so grateful for the love and support of my AA brothers and sisters, because on March 29, I celebrated 33 years of being free of alcohol.

“Working at The Bridge is a tremendous gift. Every day I get to see reminders of my own broken life prior to finding AA. And I get to share my experience, strength, and hope with those folks thinking about ending their relationship with alcohol.”

The Bridge Behavioral Health connects people suffering from addiction and related mental-health issues with support and treatment.
