Branched Oak Observatory (theboo.org) welcomed space enthusiasts of all ages for its first annual AstroCon on August 15, bringing together astronomy, science, history, art and a little bit of science fiction for an evening of exploration.
One of the evening’s special guests was Nebraska astronaut Clay Anderson, who met with attendees and signed books. Guests also had the chance to meet legendary comic artist Bob Hall, along with artists Nate Hamel and Marshal Parrish, who created live sketches throughout the event. Members of the 501st Legion joined in on the fun, while attendees were encouraged to get creative themselves during an AstroCon cosplay costume contest.
The event also offered a look back at America’s fascination with space exploration through a collection of Space Age artifacts from the 1950s and 1960s. The Museum of American Speed contributed vintage rocket-themed pedal cars to the display.
Families could take part in space crafts and STEM activities, meet “Mike the Meteorite” and browse work from local artists, makers and vendors. As the sun went down, Branched Oak Observatory turned its attention to the real night sky, giving guests an opportunity to experience astronomy through its telescopes.
