Because not all classrooms require walls, Bright Lights Summer Learning Program is focusing on increasing the number of outdoor education classes on their schedule for summer 2015. These classes will help develop physical skills as well as unique opportunities for personal and social development.

Beyond the adrenaline rush, the ‘Rock Climbing Challenge’ class will utilize the tool of adventure to teach students safety and competence on the climbing wall as they build trust, problem solving, communication and cooperation with their partners. ‘Pedal Power’ will build confidence and responsibility as students learn new riding skills, the rules of the road and bike maintenance on single track bike trails, a closed course and the streets of Lincoln. Both of these new classes are being developed in collaboration with the UNL Outdoor Adventure Center.

In another new class, ‘Outdoor Adventures’, students will experience the basics of fishing, caring for horses and bulls on a working ranch and animal tracking and archery at Boosalis Park. Along with gaining confidence as they achieve personal success in these experiences, students will also develop an understanding of the importance of conservation and sustaining the natural environment.
