Center for People in Need Partners with Junior League to Create Diaper Bank
The Center for People in Need (cfpin.org) has partnered with The Junior League of Lincoln (JLL) to create the JLL Diaper Bank—the first diaper bank in Lincoln. The goal is to make a positive impact on the thousands of Lancaster County residents suffering from “diaper need,” which is the insufficient supply of diapers to keep babies clean, dry, and healthy. The diaper bank will collect, store, and distribute free diapers to member agencies throughout Lincoln, which will then distribute those diapers to struggling families. Diapers will be collected through local diaper drives, in-kind donations, and by direct purchase with donated funds. Membership is currently limited, but the JLL Diaper Bank will begin signing up new agencies in 2021.
At a cost of about $80 per month per child, buying enough diapers can be an insurmountable expense for low-income families. To extend their diaper supplies, some families do not change their child’s diaper as often as needed or wash and attempt to reuse disposable diapers. This can result in negative health effects on the child, including diaper rash and urinary tract infections. It is estimated that about 6,000 children suffer diaper need in Lancaster County.
The Center for People in Need is a community-based nonprofit dedicated to helping low-income people achieve economic independence. For the safety of clients and staff, the Center’s services currently are limited to food and diaper distribution. If you are interested in helping low-income parents keep their children healthy and happy, donate online at cfpin.org, contact the Center at (402) 476-4357 to arrange a no-contact diaper donation, or ship diapers directly to the Center at 3901 N 27th St.
