Community Action Partnership of Lancaster and Saunders Counties (www.communityactionatwork.org) , a Lincoln-based non-profit organization that focuses on empowering individuals living in poverty to reach long-term economic stability, announces the 50th anniversary of its founding.

Incorporated under the name “Lincoln Action Program” on October 15, 1965, Community Action is one of more than 1,000 agencies of its kind across the nation today. Community Action agencies were born out of the Economic Opportunity Act of 1964, a movement which envisioned a new way to fight poverty in America, giving communities the authority and resources to implement programs designed to provide not temporary relief, but long-term solutions to individuals living in poverty.

Today, Community Action serves over 17,000 individuals each year through 16 poverty-fighting programs and services in Lancaster and Saunders Counties, including Head Start and Early Head Start. The agency will commemorate 50 years of service in Southeast Nebraska at a gathering to be held on Thursday, October 15th, 2015 at the Van Brunt Visitors Center in Lincoln.
